A SHORT THAMES SIDE WALK , LONDON.

Afternoon walk

I"ve been visiting London, since my dad took me to see a FA Cup Final in the old Wembley
stadium, 70 years ago. I live in the North of England, and to make travel abroad easier, i stay overnight in an hotel, so as to leave on the first
Eurostar of the day. This means i have an afternoon in London, always something new to see. In the year
2014, i took a bus to London Bridge. From here i could see the new Shard building, then set off to walk on the north
bank of the river Thames, toward the Tower bridge in view.. It was very busy because on this
lovely sunny November day, people were going to the Tower of London, to see the Poppy
display in the Moat. HMS Belfast is moored opposite the Tower and is now a museum.--
I walked under the road of the the Tower bridge to St. Katharine Dock, this is a redevlopment area. -- After having a good look round i left to go to see St. Paul"s Cathedral. finishing a enjoyable afternoon.-----------------THE SHARD, LONDON-- Construction started 2009, completed 2012 310 metres high, tallest in Western Europe

I must spend some time really appreciating London. It tends just to be somewhere I pass through. There really is so much to see.

We didn't get to London the year of the poppies but a friend took a picture and sent it to us. They were very striking.

The first time we were in London when we visited St. Paul's, it was time for Vespers and we got to sit up in the choir and sing. That was a real thrill. We even got in free which was somewhat of a thrill too. We were surprised to discover museums were free and churches charged entry. It's somewhat opposite to what we're used to doing. I guess we sang for our entry . . . ;)

Here we wear the Poppies in May on Memorial Day. One of the things I wanted to do in London was visit St. Pauls for evensong. But I never got there.

I remember the poppies at the Tower very well - Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red.

We often take a walk by the Thames but we tend to prefer the South Bank as you get better views of the city and more of it is traffic free. Next time you have a free afternoon in town try the walk from London Bridge to Rotherhithe, or the other way to Waterloo. Or if you have plenty of time, put those two together!

Thanks Sarah, -- I,ve done the walk to Waterloo. Perhaps next time to Rotherhithe, -- Alec.
